Abstract

This study examined public reactions to a Facebook post depicting Taz Jane’s love for her “before” and “after” body where her before self was a thin young model versus an older average-sized nude. A content analysis on the 150 most recent comments about Taz Jane’s contributions to the positive Body Image Movement identified seven themes including: physical appearance, body standards, children and family life, gender, health and fitness, media, and self-esteem. The most prevalent theme was physical appearance, comprising approximately 48.7% of the comments. While mainly encouraging towards Taz Jane’s current body and efforts, the views also emphasized ways in which females continue to be negatively impacted by society’s preoccupation with weight and unrealistic body image ideals.
