Creating Powerful Interactions by Asking Questions
Abstract
The purpose of this video is to demonstrate the three steps to creating a Powerful Interaction through questions, drawing on ideas covered in Powerful Interactions: How to Connect with Children to Extend Their Learning (Dombro et al., 2011). Our team’s intention was to take the information offered within the text and present it in a simple, step-by-step visual format that is useful to viewers, exploring how thoughtful questioning can support children’s learning and demonstrate the principles of powerful interactions in action.
This video provides viewers with four strategies for transforming everyday interactions with children into powerful interactions through the use of questions. It emphasizes the importance of observing each child’s actions, emotions, and interests to ensure that questions and responses align with the child’s current focus. The video illustrates how educators can signal their readiness to listen and highlights the role of patience in allowing children sufficient time to think and respond. It also highlights that children respond differently, and educators should acknowledge and build on these varied responses rather than expecting a single correct answer.
Using puppetry, simple animations, clear bullet points, and examples, the video presents these concepts in an engaging and accessible format. The project reflects our team’s shared understanding of how intentional questioning can strengthen relationships and support children’s learning and development. It also demonstrates our commitment to providing others with practical guidance for creating meaningful interactions, offering strategies and insights that can be applied to foster more powerful and intentional engagement with children.
